55 Ways to Get More Energy?

by Paul on 21 May 2009

Over at Zen Habits Greg Go wrote about 55 Ways to get more energy.

Here are his 55 headings, but with my comments, not his.  (Some serious, some not!)

1. Change your socks for refreshment.

Curiously I can confirm that this works…

2. Rock out loud.

Yup, but expect to get laughed at if you’ve got a voice like mine.

3. Get rid of the stuffy nose.

Where to?

4. Work with your body’s clock.

Agreed, I’m easily best in the morning.  Useless in the afternoon and OK again in the evening.

5. Have a piece of chocolate.

Why only a piece?

6. Have an afternoon power snack.

Hey, I wonder if that’ll fix item 4 for me?

7. Hit up the water cooler for inconsequential banter.

But we don’t have one.  Lucky for Twitter.

8. Eat lots of berries.

Preferably with ice-cream :)

9. Wear brighter colors.

A bit difficult for us Salvation Army Officers…

10. Take a power nap.

At least hourly.

11. Flirt.

Hmmm…  only with your wife or husband if you’re married.  (But with this proviso, it definitely works – I tried it today)

12. Aromatherapy with lavender.

Who’s this Lavender girl?

13. Wake up at the same time everyday.

Amazingly this does work.

14. Drink lots of water.

Indeed.

15. Use caffeine wisely.

[PANIC MODE ON] Whaaaaat!  Aaaarrgghh!

16. Avoid energy drinks.

Fair enough.

17. Eat low glycemic (low or complex carb) foods.

I don’t even understand this one.

18. Eat more soluble fiber.

Or this one but they both sound horrendously healthy.

19. Get your Vitamin C.

My Mum told me that years ago.

20. Sniff some citrus.

This doesn’t sound normal…

21. Cover the B Vitamins.

With a blanket?

22. Quit smoking.

If everyone agrees with this, and they seem to, how come the tobacco companies are still so rich?

23. Play to relax.

As often as possible.

24. Eat smaller, more frequent meals.

Take out the “even” words and I’m definitely with you “Eat… more… meals”

25. Enjoy a cup of tea.

Can’t stand the stuff.

26. Splash some water on your face.

If nothing else it’ll wake you up from that nap.

27. Stand up, stretch and take a couple of deep breaths.

Yup.

28. Get your world organized.

I use the GTD methodology via eProductivity on Lotus Notes.  It works – Much more energy.

29. Look on the bright side.

Always [whistling with arms held wide] – If you don’t get this, you’re not a Monty Python fan.

30. Take a mini-vacation.

And a maxi one too.

31. Eat a satisfying breakfast but a light lunch.

I really struggle eating brekkie – Maybe I should try it?

32. Choose protein over fat or carbs.

Rats – I knew this would come up.

33. Shed a few pounds.

See #32 above

34. Listen to tunes while you work.

Doesn’t work for me.  I need silence to concentrate.

35. Start exercising.

Yah the Nintendo Wii and Wii Fit.

36. Eliminate stress.

Disagree.  A life without stress would bore me silly.  Maybe it should read “Eliminate unnecessary or excessive stress”.

37. Have more sex.

Agree, once again with the same proviso as for flirting.

38. Move gym time to the morning.

Gym… Gym… Close your filthy mouth!

39. Purge low-value tasks from your todo list.

Amen – The 80/20 rule rules!

40. Avoid the mid-day cocktail.

Never touch the stuff.

41. Get a massage.

Never tried it but sounds sensible.

42. Dress up.

Yup.

43. Don’t drink yourself to sleep.

Never, ever do this.

44. Get a thyroid test from your doctor.

If you’re really down on energy this certainly makes sense.

45. Take a walk outside.

Good idea.

46. Lower your blood pressure.

Gee, that sounds easy doesn’t it…

47. Rotate yogurt into your diet.

Yuck, I hate yoghurt.

48. Have a laugh.

Always and as often as possible.

49. Add more cardio to your gym time.

There’s that dirty word [Gym] again.

50. Take up yoga.

Sounds too close to yoghurt for me.

51. Eat eggs.

Yup, we don’t want to see those chickens out of work, do we.

52. Get a good night’s sleep.

So how do we get this AND #37 as well?

53. Get more ginseng.

If you say so…

54. Socialize.

Unless you’re a heavy introvert in which case socialising will only sap more energy out of you.

55. Get on your toes.

Good little mini exercise.
