25 Ways to Procrastinate

Yes, this is a productivity blog!

Yes, it’s all about being more productive.

Then why do you need to know how to procrastinate?

Two reasons really:

  1. You actually procrastinate without realising it.  If this is you, then maybe, just maybe, you’ll recognise some things here and be able to deal with them; and

  2. You’re a work-a-holic.  Effective yes, but you’re missing balance.  Missing the fun of life.  Maybe you need a little procrastination in your life – Just don’t let procrastination use you – you should use it.

This list of procrastination methods must come with a caveat.  Many are also extremely legitimate methods of good productivity/business etc.  As I’ve already posted number 1 (Twitter) is an extremely valuable tool if used correctly.

So, without further ado, here are 25 ways to procrastinate (some good, some bad, many horrible):

  1. Twitter

  2. Play games on-line

  3. Do some work you really enjoy (at the expense of what actually needs doing)

  4. Help someone else

  5. Check Facebook for updates

  6. Colour code your Day Planner

  7. Make your fantasy/virtual sports picks

  8. Re-label your GTD folders just because you can

  9. Install yet another productivity software solution and transfer all your information

  10. IM the guy in the office next to you

  11. Check Facebook for updates

  12. Tape that same guys work to his desk when he’s out to lunch

  13. Go get your 10th cup of coffee (it is only 11am after all)

  14. Work out how many ways you can convince yourself that you’ll eventually do that piece of work

  15. Write even very short tasks in your to-do list instead of just doing them

  16. Check Facebook for updates

  17. Sit and worry about a big project (make sure its in front of you) then file it again

  18. Walk around the office with a piece of paper in your hand (The paper is important, otherwise people will think you’ve got nothing to do)

  19. Pick new colours or theme for your desktop

  20. Look through your in-box/pending-box just in case there’s something that’s actually interesting to do there

  21. Spend half a day working on an Excel spreadsheet using amazing functions to produce a list you could have typed in 10 minutes

  22. Go to someone else’s office/cubicle and discuss the weekend’s game for 20 minutes

  23. Change your fantasy/virtual sports picks

  24. Check Facebook for updates

  25. Make a list about how to stop your procrastination

Haha, this reminds me of some of my old habits. I don’t have facebook anymore, I deleted solitaire off of my computers a long time ago, and I installed a site blocker which specifically blocks digg. :)
