Are We That Stupid?

Do marketers think we are really that stupid?  Sorry for the quality of the photo (taken indoors at night on my Treo Pro) but do they think we’re going to do backflips because of “Fruity New Packaging” around a Yoghurt product?

Or maybe I’m kidding myself, maybe the general public does respond to this sort of thing.  If so, I despair.

For my part, I’d rather treat people as intelligent adults so you won’t find me marketing[tags]marketing[/tags] my blog that way!

Alot of people shop on auto-pilot, automatically picking up the same familiar brand each time. How often do you pick up "the usual" in the supermarket simply by picking up the familiar packaging as opposed to actively reading the words on the label? It's just letting people know that the product will look different soon. Otherwise they risk a significant sales drop when they update their look.

sadly enough people will see the words 'fruity' and 'new' and respond to them, missing that it is only the packaging, and not even yet ('coming soon') … there will be enough sales to those people to make this technique work … it's the in-store equivalent of spam which only needs a hit rate of elss than 1% to make it profitable

ps, heh, thought you were smoking a pipe when my eye first caught your picture to the top right!

I could accept that explanation if it wasn't for the fact that "Fruity New" are the highlighted words. The way its done most people won't get as far as reading that its actually packaging they're talking about!

A sad state of affairs I would agree. (Smoking my glasses maybe?)
