The SHAFTED Model of Leadership

Deliberately Stolen From Here, There And Everywhere

At a recent meeting of leaders in our organisation, Robert and Janine Donaldson, (Leaders of our training facility), presented us with a model of leadership they called SHAFTE.

They got this title using an anagrammed acronym, Stolen From Here, There And Everywhere. My only contribution to this was to suggest the addition of the word “Deliberately”, so we could call the model SHAFTED… Somehow it seemed appropriate.

My thanks to Robert and Janine for their kind permission to publish on this blog. I note their comments that as it really is a mishmash of other models, then I need to ensure attribution as per their paper.

The 3 Parts of the model

There are just 3 parts to this model:

  1. Know, develop and work to your leadership STRENGTHS
  2. Understand and fix your leadership FATAL FLAW
  3. Work with your TEAM to achieve the rest

1. Know, develop and work to your leadership STRENGTHS

A Corrected Maxim:

You can be anything you want to be, if you just try hard enough.
You cannot be anything you want to be; but you can be a lot more of who you already are.
Tom Rath. StrengthsFinder 2.0 Gallup Press

Biblical Foundations:

Genesis 1:27, 31a

Jeremiah 1:4-5

1 Corinthians 12:12-27

The Pareto Principle

The Pareto or 80/20 principle asserts that a minority of causes, inputs or effort usually lead to a majority of results, outputs or rewards. That is, 80% of what you achieve comes from 20% of time spent.
Richard Koch. The 80/20 Principle. Nicholas Brealey Publishing

It makes sense that if that if you would spend more time in that 20% (strengths) area then your results would exponentially improve!

Talent

TALENT (a natural way of thinking, feeling or behaving)
x INVESTMENT (time spent practicing, developing your skills, & building your knowledge base)
= STRENGTH (the ability to consistently provide near-perfect performance)
Tom Rath & Barry Conchie. Strengths Based Leadership. Gallup Press

2. Understand and fix your leadership FATAL FLAW

I’ll cover this aspect of the SHAFTED model of leadership in my next post on this subject.
