SHAFTED Again

Yesterday I posted the first part of a 3 part series on SHAFTED, a model of leadership presented by Robert and Janine Donaldson.

The first aspect was to know, develop and work to your leadership STRENGTHS. The second is:

2. Understand and fix your leadership FATAL FLAW

American Idol

Simon Cowell, a judge on the popular TV show ‘American Idol,’ has acquired a nasty reputation for his severe criticism of the pop-star hepofuls. “My attitude has always been ‘Don’t lie to people,’ ” Simon says. “Kids turn up unrehearsed, wearing the wrong clothes, singing out of tune and you can either say, ‘Good job,’ and patronise them or tell them the truth, and sometimes the truth is perceived as mean.”

The real question is, why do these contestants show up? Even the untrained ear can discern that many of them can’t sing. Yet they believe with miraculous sincerity that they can make it big. What has happened here?

Someone lied. In an attempt to encourage… In the name of love… Out of a desire to protect the self-image of a young person, someone lied.

If You’re Continually Facing Obstacles

Make sure you are not the problem!

To reach your potential you need to know who you are:

  • See yourself clearly – the good and the bad
  • Admit your flaws accurately – own up to what you cannot do or should not do

Ten Most Frequent Flaws

  1. Not inspiring due to a lack of energy and enthusiasm
  2. Accepting mediocre performance in place of excellent results
  3. Lack of clear vision and direction
  4. Loss of trust stemming from perceived bad judgment and poor decisions
  5. Not a collaborative, team player
  6. Not a good role model (failure to walk the talk)
  7. No self-development and learning from mistakes
  8. Lacking interpersonal skills
  9. Resistant to new ideas, thus did not lead change or innovate
  10. Focus on self, not the development of others

How to Fix Fatal Flaws

Massive doses of feedback. After this a leader has 3 options:

  1. Deny the information
  2. Choose to change self-concept
  3. Change behaviour

Biblical Examples

Jethro and Moses. Exodus 18:17,24

Paul and the Galatians. Galatians 3:1

3. Work with your TEAM to achieve the rest.

I’ll cover this aspect of the SHAFTED model of leadership in my next post on this subject.
