On leave… and doing nothing.

To which a friend with a sense of humour immediately shot back:

Can you use GTD to keep your nothing under control?

Facetious in the extreme I thought. But when I thought about it a bit more I realised just how much “Getting Things Done” by David Allen (which I implement using eProductivity for Lotus Notes) does actually affect my leave.

The three main benefits (in order of importance) are:

1. No Worries When I left the office I knew what was on the go, and who was looking after what.

2. No Worries When I left the office my email inbox was at zero so on holiday I’m just scanning incoming just in case a real urgent arrives. (It hasn’t)

3. No Worries I’m kicking back knowing that nothing is going to bite me in the bum because I’m on top of it all.

So yes, I can use GTD to keep my nothing under control.

I intend to do this (over time) and at the same time I challenge you to ask these questions of yourself.

I don’t mean, that you’re trying to say one thing but it’s perceived all wrong… I mean you actually say the wrong thing.

I do it all the time. On Sunday I was preaching on the beatitudes

Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they shall be called sons of God.

and I was emphasising the difference between peacemakers (what Jesus was talking about) and peacekeepers (what we think about by default). Near the end I used the wrong one and exhorted people to be peacekeepers! [Slaps head] Doh

But everyone knew what I meant so it wasn’t actually a problem.

The real problem occurs when it’s my behaviour that lapses to a default setting. This can happen without knowing about it and it causes massive conflicts between what I say and what I do.

This is when I need someone to keep me accountable. For this reason I thank God for Raewyn and for the Holy Spirit.
